Tearful Ben Shephard celebrates ‘remarkable’ news of Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper returning home
On Thursday, it was announced that Derek, 53, was finally returning home to Kate and their two children after first being admitted to hospital in March 2020.
He will receive round-the-clock care at their North London home, which has been adapted for his needs.
On Friday’s edition of This Morning, Ben Shephard spoke to co-presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford about his colleague’s ‘amazing’ news.
He said that ‘all of us are still reeling a little bit’, as it ‘all happened quickly’.
The presenter said: ‘Kate’s been talking about this for a long time,’ explaining that Derek’s ‘recovery was stalling a little bit’ and so he ‘needed to come home’ to have that ‘contact’ with his family.
Ben said that ‘all of us were beaming’ when they found out the news, adding that he has received plenty of positive messages from Good Morning Britain viewers over the development.
‘It’s just remarkable,’ he stated, as he looked teary-eyed.
‘As Kate pointed out, this is the next page of a very big chapter and the journey is by no means over, but it’s such an important step for Derek to be at home.’
Ben recalled when Kate first told him that Derek was going to hospital after testing positive for coronavirus, saying that he believed Derek would be ‘fine’ as he was ‘not in bad shape’.
‘To think the journey they’ve all been on, to have only just come home,’ he added.
Ben stressed that, ‘as Kate keeps saying’, Derek is ‘a very unqiue case, what he’s been through’, which means his recovery will likely ‘be pretty unique as well’.
‘But crucially, he is at home. So they can hug him and they can talk to him,’ he said.
Derek was hospitalised at the end of March last year and is confirmed to be Britain’s longest-surviving coronavirus hospital patient.
He was put into an induced coma to help his body fight the effects of the disease.
He later entered a state of minimal consciousness when he was awoken.
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
