Microsoft studio The Coalition has apparently already started work on Gears 6 but rumours of making a Star Wars game may not be true.

When trying to work out what Microsoft’s various first party studios are up to at the moment you don’t need to be an insider to guess that The Coalition has already started on Gears 6.

Gears 5 ended on a cliffhanger and The Coalition were set-up specifically to continue the Gears of War franchise, so another game is a no-brainer – but apparently that’s not the only thing they’re working on.

According to VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb they’re also helping out with Halo Infinite and working on a third project that is ‘likely’ a new IP.

In his latest podcast, Grubb wasn’t specific about exactly what The Coalition are doing for Halo Infinite but their involvement is not surprising as publishers, including Nintendo and Sony, often have multiple internal studios collaborating on a major project.

It’s the third project that’s the mystery though, especially as earlier rumours had suggested that it might be a Star Wars project.

No evidence for it being Star Wars related was ever offered, but Bethesda studio MachineGames is already working on an Indiana Jones game – for still unspecified formats.

Lucasfilm Games has made it clear that they are willing to give the Star Wars licence to more than just EA, but the only one so far announced is an open world title by Ubisoft.

What’s less clear is whether Lucasfilm would allow a new game to be a format exclusive, which it would presumably have to be for The Coalition to work on it.

Disney has already allowed Marvel games, most obviously the Spider-Man titles, to be format exclusives though, which suggests the same could also happen with Star Wars.

Grubb notes that he hasn’t been able to confirm the Star Wars rumours though and that the project is more likely to be a new IP.

He’s also unclear on whether the game would be released before or after Gears 6, but one of the titles, at least, may be announced at E3 in June.
