WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen defends Scarlet Witch’s escape before finale post-credits scene cliffhanger
WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen has addressed the tense cliffhanger in the post-credits scene for the finale of the Marvel series on Disney Plus, explaining why Scarlet Witch fled rather than face punishment.
Following the traumatic death of her partner Vision (Paul Bettany) in Avengers: Infinity War, WandaVision sees Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth) use her powers to create a fake reality in a town called Westview, complete with a new version of the synthezoid and their two children, Billy (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne).
Having also trapped the real-life residents of the New Jersey town in her sitcom-inspired reality, Wanda finally breaks down her Hex in the season finale and jets off to a remote location, where those who were trapped in her reality cannot reach her.
Some may have felt that Wanda got away too easily, considering she literally had an entire neighbourhood under lock and key… albeit unaware that those under her control were also experiencing her own pain and grief.
During a recent interview, Elizabeth, who is set to reprise the role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, stressed that Wanda is likely experiencing a lot of guilt, which is why she decided to remove herself from the situation straight away.
‘She had to get away before the people who have to hold her accountable got there,’ she told Rolling Stone.
‘And where she went is a place that no one could find her. Because she knows that she is going to be held accountable, and I think she has a tremendous amount of guilt.’
WandaVision isn’t the first time Wanda has had to cope with the consequences of her incredible power, despite trying her best to use them for good.
In Avengers: Civil War, the feud between Earth’s mightiest superheroes begins when she accidentally causes an explosion at a building in Lagos, killing several humanitarian workers from Wakanda who were inside.
When we next see Wanda in the Doctor Strange sequel, she will have gained far more experience and knowledge as the Scarlet Witch after obtaining the Darkhold.
The Darkhold, which was introduced to her in WandaVision by witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), is a book of magic created using dark matter from the Hell Dimension.
In the WandaVision finale post-credits scene, Wanda is shown Astral projecting while reading the Darkhold, before hearing her children crying out to her.
Given Agatha told Wanda that the Scarlet Witch is more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme, we’d imagine she and Doctor Strange are going to have a spectacular showdown when they face each other.
WandaVision is available to watch on Disney Plus.
